Typically, you’re likely to see flocks of people wearing athletic gear during the first few months of the year as everyone swarms to follow through on their fitness New Year Resolutions. But this year — well into the middle of July — it is clear that the athletic gear phenomenon has become a year-long trend. That’s right comfort lovers: it is now okay to wear workout pullovers, leggings, and dare we say it: sports bras, to almost any occasion.

Athletic gear has always been a big business, but new athletic apparel lines like Karma Athletics, Varley, Koral and of course Beyonce’s Ivy Park have brought a new flavor to fitness gear that makes it incredibly versatile and fashion forward. Designers are taking cues from current fashion trends and even high-end runways, turning athletic wear into closet staples that are well worth the investment. But that doesn’t mean that all fashion rules are void. Here are some simple tips to guide you in styling your athletic gear for everyday wear the right way:

1. Stick to Neutrals

As much as we can’t deny our undying love for a good pair of bright and bold workout leggings, opt for a subdued look for everyday wear. Stick to neutrals to maintain a clean and understated look that is appropriate for a day of running errands that turns into a happy hour date with pals.

2. Consider Current Trends

Although you should keep fashion trends-at-large in mind, fitness gear has trends of its own. While some trends are timeless (like all black, of course) some athletic gear trends are only hot for the time being. While mesh panels were a viral phenomenon a few months back, that fad — like many others — eventually faded. If you enjoy racking up on new gear regularly, don’t invest too heavily on waning trends. If you prefer to indulge every once in a while, timeless pieces that will still be in style months down the road are your best bet. Exhibit A: A pair a track Adidas is always a go.

The faux pas of wearing makeup or jewelry with your fitness gear is long gone. Go ahead – put on that Mac Ruby Woo and some hot sunnies. These additions plus some fresh kicks will be your new go-to’s.

4. Mix & Match Athletic Gear with Closet Staples

Don’t be shy – it is totally okay to rock your favorite leather moto jacket with a pair of workout leggings and sneakers. Mixing in staple pieces from your closet that don’t contrast with your fitness gear is the perfect way to add your own flavor to this popular trend.

5. Wear with Caution

Although the amount of places where it is acceptable to wear athletic gear has certainly increased, some places and occasions are simply off limits. Work, an upscale dinner, or meeting your in-law’s for the first are most likely some of those occasions.
