How to Find Affordable Clothing that Looks Expensive

We all want to look fresh off the Spring/Summer 2017 runway — but not all of our pockets will allow for those fabulous high fashion pieces. That doesn’t mean that it is impossible to find editorial-ready looks at a lower budget. When it comes to fashion, it isn’t about where you shop but HOW you shop. And with these major tips, you’ll have fellow fashionistas begging to know your style secrets.

  1. The Fabric

There are some fabrics that can add a sense of luxury to your look at any price point. Opt for fabrics that are simple or can pass as easy knock offs of expensive materials. Remember to avoid any material that is too stretchy, shiny or includes too many meticulous details that are not well suited when made cheaply.  You can never go wrong with Linen, Faux Suede, Cotton, Rayon, Acrylic, Polyester — make these your go-to’s when shopping on a budget.

2. The Fit

A universal fashion rule of thumb: fit ALWAYS matters, possibly more than any other detail of an outfit. Nothing can make an outfit scream cheap like a poorly fitted item; especially a statement piece. Make sure that even if the item you are dying for doesn’t fit perfectly, the imperfections are something a good tailor can spruce up. NEVER GO TOO SMALL. And when sizing is an issue, don’t bother shopping for items that have complex details that are difficult for a tailor to work around.

3. The Finish

We all love fun details when we are shopping for statement pieces. After all, these are the elements that really make a piece unique. When shopping on a budget, be leery of finishes that are good in theory but make a good piece look cheap. Avoid big fake stones, super shiny finishes that are bound to wear or fall off. Instead, opt for textured or hammered finishes that can hide imperfections  that inevitably come with purchasing less expensive pieces. For faux bags and shoes, pebbled or textured details can create an expensive illusion.

4. The Layers

Good outerwear, along with a good pair of shoes, are the things you should aim to invest a bit more in for your closet. But once you make the investment, you’ll be so happy that you did. Timeless outerwear pieces are the easiest way to keep your closet up to date. Keeping in mind earlier tips, these will always add an expensive flare to any look. Styles to always keep in the front your closet: camel, nay peacoat, black moto jacket, belted trench, raw denim.
